I’ve had the privilege to meet up with singer-songwriter, Aidan Cornhill for the past 2 days at the Oyster Box in Umhlanga.
I must say, I could get used to sitting at there on that top floor with that view drinking tea, but that’s beside the point.
In case you haven’t noticed, Aidan hasn’t been playing shows lately. With his 16 month baby boy, Noah, it hasn’t been easy to dedicate much time to himself or his music. However he has seemed to work miracles and has even dedicated his music to Noah. Aidan has almost completed writing his latest album with a total of 18 songs thus far.
“I was thinking of calling the album “Home” because I started writing it here before I had a family of my own. A couple of the songs are autobiographical and some are really dark. What’s been written has been there also along with this big life change.”
Another option is “Ghost of Lion” which is the title of a song he wrote, an analogy of returning to a place where all the people and their lifestyles have changed completely to how they were before. This applied to Aidan returning from London to Durban with a new family.
“Living in this flat with this new lifestyle, I rarely cross paths with people I know… so its actually like a different city to me… so i had this idea, i wrote the song from a ghosts point of view ” i might be dead but it feels like no one has woken up yet”. I could describe myself as a lion because my friends and I would always be in charge of our lives and- I felt like a lion”
This theme also shows in the song about his baby, Noah: “We came back to this small sea-side village where nothing had changed but everything was different.”
I wanted to film Aidan playing one of his new songs, Noah. Wow that song keeps playing over and over in my head. I love it. It took a few takes because firstly, we weren’t really allowed to film in the hotel without permission and secondly I filmed on the first day with the worst quality cam corder- so we had to return the next day to do it properly. I’m extremely glad we did. So go on… open it full screen…
I like how the album is quite personal from what Aidan has told me. He’s really the most awesome, down to earth guy with such a passion for what he does. It’s really inspiring.
Aidan is hoping to be able to concentrate more on his music career and work on getting his album out as soon as possible. Really I’m sure we’re all extremely excited to hear it, I know I am
All the best, Aidan!
